Avocados are delicious. You can eat an avocado on its own, with a bit of salt and pepper, with white vinegar, in a prawn cocktail, on brown toast, or on white toast, in a salad or as a side dish. You can have an avocado for breakfast, lunch or dinner. In fact, if you lived on avocado alone, you would still be pretty healthy.
We love avocados served on the side with fried eggs for breakfast, in a salad with salmon for lunch, and alongside a delicious fat steak for dinner. We quite like them smashed onto toast, sliced on cracker bread, or just on their own for a snack.
We love avocados all the time. You should too, they are the healthiest of fruits.
What do avocados have in them?
Avocados have many nutrients, vitamins and minerals. An avocado is high in healthy fats, vitamin C and vitamin K, folate, potassium, vitamins B5, vitamins B6 and vitamins B3. An avocado always has magnesium, zinc, iron, some copper, manganese, phosphorous and trace elements of other vitamins.
Avocados have no sodium in them and are very low in cholesterol. They are also low in carbohydrates, although should be eaten in moderation when on a weight loss diet or a diagnosed diabetic.
They are a magic food and can be combined with anything. An avocado a day is like an apple a day. Healthy.
Here is our best and easiest recipe with an Avocado
Strawberry and avocado salad
-2 tablespoons olive oil
-2 tablespoons white sugar
-4 teaspoons honey
-2 cups salad greens, torn
-10 strawberries, sliced
-1/2 cup pecans
-Place your lettuce on the bottom of a plate or bowl.
-Peel and slice your avocado and add the slices on top of the lettuce.
-Place the strawberries alongside the avocado.
-Sprinkle the pecans over.
-Drizzle with honey.
-The above salad is a real summer salad. Enjoy it at a picnic or a long summer lunch, on its own or perhaps with a grilled chicken breast for something more substantial.
The avocado can also be used to make the most fabulous and tangy salsa, or a guacamole.
Avocados are a versatile fruit – yes, they are a fruit – and can be pretty much added to anything.
One of the best things you can do is get your child eating avocado from an early age.

How to choose your avocado
Avocados do not ripen on the tree. They fall off, or get picked off, and ripen after a few days. Avocados can have a green, dark green, purple or black skin. When you buy them you don’t want them to be too hard. You should be able to put your finger in and ‘feel’ a little softness. If it is too soft, your avocado will be overripe. If it is very hard, it may take ages to ripen. Or it may not ripen at all.
If you have chosen an avocado that is not ripe you can wrap it in some newspaper and leave it in a fairly dark place. It should ripen within a day or two. You can also place your avocado next to a ripened banana. This speeds up the ripening process, something to do with the plant hormones although it is really a mystery!
If you are able to, buy your avocados from an organic greengrocer or health store. It is always better to eat your fruit and vegetables when no chemical sprays are in the picture. Many avocados are genetically modified these days – these would be the perfect green avocados that you see without any bruising.
Don’t be too fussy. Whether organic or not, the avocado is good for you and the health benefits of even a genetically modified avocado are excellent.

Where to get avocados?
You may be lucky enough to have your own avocado tree that is abundant in avocados. If not, buy them from your local whole food store, any health store or a supermarket. The avocado can be expensive, but it is worth it.
You can also grow your own avocado by using the pips, a few toothpicks and a glass jar. It takes just a few days for the pip to seed and sprout roots and leaves. An avocado tree however does become very big, so make sure you have a good spot in the garden to transplant it to.
