Mangosteen is a tropical fruit that is predominantly found in Southeast Asia.
In a study conducted by the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences’ (UCAS) College of Life Sciences, the pericarp of the mangosteen fruit was seen to destroy breast cancer cells effectively and with no side effects.
This fruit which is grown in large quantities in Malaysia and Thailand has an exquisite compound that instigates cell death or apoptosis in cancerous cells in the breasts.
A further study by a team from UCAS looked at how alpha-mangostin influences the multi-enzyme protein which is responsible for catalysing the formation of a long-chain of fatty acids derived from various compounds known as fatty acid synthase (FAS).
The FAS is also usually observed along with the occurrence of breast cancer.
In tests carried out it was observed by researchers that the alpha-mangostin inhibits the FAS, which leads to a reduction in the buildup of intracellular fatty acid.
It was also seen that alpha-mangostin instigates apoptosis in human test subjects breast cancer cells.
It was stated by researchers that the alpha-mangostin was effective in inhibiting FAS expression as well as intracellular FAS activity which led to a reduction in the intracellular fatty acid buildup. This finding was published in the journal of Molecular Cancer.
It was also indicated that alpha-mangostin could raise the levels of the PARP cleavage product, while decreasing cell viability and instigating apoptosis in human breast cancer cells.
However, choosing the right mangosteen products is crucial and only those that are without toxic contaminants should be used.
The UCAS scientists believe that this breakthrough in mangosteen xanthones may soon be adopted as a viable alternative in breast cancer therapy treatment.
This is because it is relatively easy to obtain and it could be recommended as a food that helps in breast cancer prevention.
The awareness of the presence of heavy metals in the mangosteen products is a big concern however and it is believed that at least one major supplier of dried mangosteen powder to the U.S is laced with a high concentration of brain damaging metal lead as well as cadmium, aluminum, mercury and arsenic.
While mangosteen is a proven anticancer superfood caution must be exercised in obtaining only those products that are free from dangerous toxins like the aforementioned that can do more harm to the human body than good.
